
JUST TRY
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned as an adult is this:
to JUST TRY! Dive in head first! Make a choice and go ALL in.
Anytime I have tried something, even if I failed I never regretted it. Ok, maybe that Annie perm in 3rd grade should have been avoided…but really what did I lose besides a 3rd-grade boyfriend?
BUT, I did gain something from it. I learned what doesn’t work! Annie perms are not my jam. But in all seriousness, learning what NOT to do again is just as valuable as learning what to do again. Now I can move forward towards what DOES work.
GET TO “NO” QUICKLY
Esther Dyson the technology writer and daughter of famed physicist Freeman Dyson, says,
“Always make NEW mistakes”.
She suggests that we should not only embrace risk but also learn to ‘fail fast’, then make more mistakes quickly to steepen the learning curve.
EVERYTHING YOU DO is CLARITY. Clarity is a way for us to give order to the path we’re on. It starts to weed out the many paths we could go down and now makes our choices more clear, more definitive. Embrace the messy and confusing because you won’t be there long. Like Dyson said get to the “No” quickly because that clarity shows us where we no longer need to spend our time, freeing up our time so we can now spend it in the areas that can make change and help us to move forward with our goal.
You WANT to FEEL that incongruence between discomfort and comfort because it’s like a bad rash, you’ll do anything to make it go away. You need that pain to motivate you to get the hell out of there. To motivate you to move forward and find answers, to get you to your goal.
Just jumping in headfirst and having the courage to TRY is the biggest hurdle you will ever have to jump over when trying something new. How many times have you not even tried something you’ve always wanted to do because you were too scared, too afraid to be that vulnerable, and have someone see you fail.
Do you know how many times Thomas Edison failed before he actually made the lightbulb work? He looked like a fool so many times. But if that’s how we define a fool, call me a fool any day of the week.
Edison said,
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work” Any time you try, you take a risk that you might fail. Don’t ever be afraid to try.
Theodore Roosevelt said,
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
This quote is so powerful! Life is for trying! You won’t have lived if you just sit back and avoid mistakes. Mistakes just come with the territory. It’s an essential part of the process.
What’s not ok is, not even trying. Let’s do this work together! Join me in learning to stop repeating our mistakes. If you learn from the failure, it’s no longer a mistake-you got better. Isn’t that the whole point, to get a little better and do a little better each day? So let’s do this, let’s get in the arena and try!

FIND JOY IN THE PROCESS
We’ve heard it a million times but it doesn’t make it any less true. As soon as we find joy in the journey we won’t be as upset with our failures. We can find joy in getting better each day, in trying.
We’re on the road to our goals because we know we are learning something new. Something that got us closer to where we want to be. You’ll start to almost even look forward to obstacles and failings because you’ll know you just got a step closer to your goal.
NOW WHAT?!
This week’s post is a little fluffy. Fluff isn’t bad if it motivates you.
Motivation is great! But how do we use that motivation to really take actionable steps towards change?
What I can’t stand about most self-help books is that although they are chock-full of motivation, they lack the follow-through! I often walk away from the book wanting more, saying to myself, “Now what?!”
